Zoomlion Begins Large-Scale Waste Management Overhaul in Nairobi
Zoomlion Kenya, a subsidiary of Zoomlion Ghana Limited under the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), has begun a major transformation of Nairobi’s waste management system under the city’s integrated waste management programme.
The Project Director of Zoomlion Kenya, Dr. Peter Dagadu, confirmed that the company is making significant progress just weeks after commencing operations in the Kenyan capital.
Speaking during a working visit by Kenya’s Majority Leader, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, to the Zoomlion head office in Nairobi on Wednesday, May 13, Dr. Dagadu said the company is working closely with city authorities to deliver an end-to-end waste management solution aimed at improving sanitation, environmental conditions, and public health.
Transforming Nairobi’s Waste Management Infrastructure
Dr. Dagadu explained that Zoomlion’s intervention focuses on a comprehensive transformation of Nairobi’s waste management system through:
- Emergency clean-up operations
- Infrastructure rehabilitation
- Long-term sustainable waste management systems
He noted that before the intervention, Nairobi had approximately 109 illegal dumpsites spread across the city, creating serious environmental and public health risks.
Large-Scale Waste Evacuation and Dandora Dumpsite Upgrades
As part of its operational strategy, Zoomlion Kenya has launched a large-scale legacy waste evacuation programme, clearing accumulated waste from illegal dumpsites and transporting it to the designated disposal facility at the Dandora Dumpsite.
To improve efficiency at the facility, Zoomlion is also implementing key upgrades, including:
- Rehabilitation of internal access roads
- Reorganisation of tipping operations
- Introduction of 24-hour operational systems
These improvements are designed to enhance traffic flow, operational efficiency, and environmental compliance.
Over 55,000 Tonnes of Waste Evacuated in Nairobi
Dr. Dagadu revealed that since operations officially began on March 27, 2026, Zoomlion Kenya has evacuated more than 55,000 tonnes of waste across Nairobi.
He noted that this figure is more than four times the previous evacuation capacity before the company’s intervention, marking a significant improvement in urban sanitation performance.
Plans for Modern Waste Collection and Circular Economy Systems
As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, Zoomlion Kenya plans to introduce a modern secondary waste collection system across Nairobi.
This will include the construction of four zonal transfer stations, each with a capacity of 800 to 1,200 tonnes per day, designed to improve waste consolidation and transportation efficiency.
In addition, the company is preparing to develop a state-of-the-art 3,600-tonne-per-day waste processing and resource recovery facility in Ruai. The facility, expected to be commissioned by November 2026, will focus on:
- Recycling
- Composting
- Resource recovery
- Landfill diversion
These initiatives align with global circular economy principles and aim to reduce Nairobi’s dependence on landfill disposal.
Inclusive Waste Management and Stakeholder Engagement
Dr. Dagadu emphasized that the programme is designed to be inclusive, ensuring participation from all key stakeholders, including:
- Informal waste sector operators
- Community groups
- Existing waste management service providers
This approach aims to promote sustainability while creating shared economic opportunities across the waste value chain.
Government and Stakeholder Support for Zoomlion Kenya
Kenya’s Majority Leader, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, praised the initiative as a strong example of intra-African collaboration and investment.
He noted that the partnership reflects a growing shift toward African-led development solutions that deliver tangible improvements in urban living conditions.
He further assured that Kenya is committed to working with capable partners who bring technical expertise and sustainable solutions to public service delivery.
Leadership Perspective on Sustainable Development
Earlier, the Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye, encouraged Zoomlion Kenya staff to remain committed, disciplined, and united as the company expands its operations across Africa.
He emphasized that national prosperity depends not only on natural resources but also on strong institutions, effective governance, and disciplined human capital.
